Baku and Health Connect
On Android, Baku can read your sleep from Health Connect, if you allow it. This page explains exactly what Baku reads, why, and what it never does with it. It is part of our privacy policy.

1. What Baku reads
Baku asks Health Connect for these read permissions only. You choose which to allow, and Baku works with any of them, or none.
- Sleep sessions and stages
- When you fell asleep and woke, time awake, and sleep stages where your device records them. Baku places each night on your moon calendar and shows wakes you may not remember, such as one at 3 a.m.
- Heart rate variability
- Measured during sleep. Compared only with your own nights, as one gentle sign of how restful a night was.
- Resting heart rate
- Compared only with your own nights, alongside how you labelled them, so you can see whether calmer nights look different.
- Respiratory rate
- Your breathing rate during sleep, read for the same comparison with your own nights.
Baku never asks to write to Health Connect, and it does not read anything else, such as your location, steps, exercise or medical records.
2. How Baku uses it
Only for features you can see in Baku:
- your nights on the moon calendar, with the times your device measured;
- the wakes your device noticed, shown as suggestions you confirm or dismiss;
- comparisons with your own earlier nights, such as nights after a nightmare and calm nights, once there are enough of each;
- if you use them, the AI Guide and your Sunday letter, which may mention your recent sleep in approximate terms. To write them, a short summary of your recent nights is sent to Anthropic, our AI processor, which does not use it to train its models. If you switch the AI off in Settings, your sleep data never reaches it.
Watches and rings estimate sleep stages from movement and heart rate. They are useful for seeing patterns over weeks, but they are not a sleep lab, so Baku shows them as approximate and never as a diagnosis.
3. What Baku never does with it
- It never sells your health data, and never uses it for advertising, ad measurement or marketing.
- It never shares it with third parties, except the processors that run Baku for us under contract: Supabase, which hosts our database in Switzerland (Zurich), and Anthropic, only when you use the AI features.
- It never uses it for anything other than Baku’s features, and never for decisions about credit, insurance or employment.
- Our team cannot read it. Our internal tools show only counts and connection errors, never anyone’s sleep.
Baku’s use of information received from Health Connect adheres to the Health Connect permissions policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Google’s health permissions policy.
4. Where it is stored
Baku reads your sleep on your phone and saves it with your Baku account in our database in Switzerland, encrypted in transit and at rest. Every record is readable only by you. Sleep data is health data under the GDPR and sensitive data under the Swiss FADP, so we process it only with your explicit consent, which you give when you connect Health Connect and can withdraw at any time.
5. Stopping access and deleting your data
- In Baku: open Settings, choose Health Connect and tap Disconnect. You decide whether the nights already imported are kept or deleted.
- In Android: open Health Connect, then App permissions, then Baku, and turn off any permission. Baku stops reading straight away.
- Your whole account: deleting your Baku account deletes all imported sleep data with everything else, after a 30-day grace period in case you change your mind.
- You can export everything, sleep data included, from Settings at any time.
6. Apple Health, WHOOP and Oura
On iPhone, Baku reads the same kinds of data from Apple Health, under the same rules. WHOOP and Oura can also connect directly with your account. All of it is described in the privacy policy. Questions: support@baku.care.
